234. Cistern

ELMINA, GHANA, 2014. Looking into the cistern. The fort sat atop an enormous cistern that collected rainwater from the entire complex and saved it for drinking and washing. Forts had to be able to withstand prolonged attack, as the Europeans were jealous of each others' foreign holdings.
