166. Old Hotel in Grand Bassam

GRAND BASSAM, COTE D'IVOIRE, 2009. Grand Bassam was capital of French colonial Africa for 3 years until a yellow fever epidemic killed hundreds. It continued as an important commercial center until 1920, when a giant wharf was built in Abidjan. Now this building and numerous others stand as mute testimonials to a prosperous past that has never been revived.
