165. OLD FRENCH BRIDGE

DEPA, COTE D'IVOIRE. Old French bridge near Depa, Cote d'Ivoire. After independence in 1960 and until 1980, considerable sums of money were spent on developing the country's roads, which are 8,000 miles in length. In 1980, commodity prices plummeted, especially cocoa and coffee, and the nation was gradually impoverished.
